Origins of Insteadove
Insteadove is the true image of a rebellious rock band, toeing the line between guitar driven rock and heavy metal.
The band was formed in the small town of Shelton, WA during the early 2000’s. This is a band that took many forms with a rotation of band members, but always had two core musicians, myself and my childhood friend Jesse.
Jesse and I started playing music together in middle school when all we had was a snare drum and used $50 acoustic guitar. Eventually Jesse joined a band called The Image of Dead Protocol. With our friend Bob on guitar and Derek on vocals, they were in need of bassist. I bought a cheap bass from our local pawn shop, and we practiced in Jesse’s garage almost daily.
Eventually Bob decided to take a producer role and I took over on guitar. We played a few shows, and eventually disbanded. Quickly reforming into Dinirika, we brought on Bob’s younger brother Buddy as our bassist. He had never played bass, but picked it up very quickly. We also brought in our second guitarist Rex. Rex was a highly proficient lead guitar player that complimented our style with aggressive rhythm and complimentary lead riffs.
However, we were in continual need of a lead singer and played numerous shows sans vocalist. We tried out multiple people, including our friend Tony who was a good guitar player, but didn’t have the presence on lead personality to cut it on the stage. We also had our friend John who had the stage presence, but lacked in vocal tone. We finally settled on our friend Mica, a female vocalist that had the theatre experience, stage presence, and vocal confidence to lead the band.
We played shows throughout Mason County and in the state capital, Olympia, WA. Insteadove finally disbanded when I left for college, a 6h drive from home.
